How is our county performing?

In 2016, there were 4.1 establishments in the Arts, Entertainment and Recreation sector per 10,000 residents in Erie County. This was slightly higher than the state rate of 3.7 and slightly lower than the U.S. rate of 4.2.

Since 2000, the county rate has fluctuated, starting at a low of 3.7 in 2000 and peaking at 4.2 in 2009. The rate declined from 2011 to 2013 before increasing in 2014 to 2016. Both the state and national rates increased from 2000 until mid-decade, then declined slightly, and then increased in recent years. Overall, in Erie County the number of establishments in this sector per 10,000 residents in 2016 was 11% higher than in 2000. The state and nation saw slightly higher increases of 13% and 15% over this time period.

How do we compare to similar counties?

In 2016, the number of Arts, Entertainment and Recreation establishments per 10,000 residents in Broome County, NY was similar to Erie, while the rates were lower in Luzerne County, PA (2.7) and Stark County, OH (3.2). All three comparison counties had lower rates than Erie from 2000 until Broome caught up to Erie in 2015.
