COPD: Spirometry Testing

Print this Page

This trend is mixed.

Spirometry measures how much and how quickly you can move air out of your lungs. For this test, you breathe into a mouthpiece attached to a recording device called a spirometer. The information collected by the spirometer may be printed out on a chart called a spirogram.

Why is this important?

  • Spirometry is the lung test used to diagnose COPD and judges how well your treatment is controlling your COPD.
  • Your doctor can better diagnose and treat your COPD when you have had a spirometry test.

How is Erie doing?

  • The charts below show the HEDIS® rates of people with COPD in Erie who got a spirometry test and are on the right track to keeping their lungs healthy.
  • The higher the numbers, the better Erie is doing. They show people have good functional lungs. They also show that they care about their overall health.
  • Erie improved in 2013 among privately (commercially) insured patients, but got worse and is lagging behind the Pennsylvania and national benchmarks in the Medicare population.

How can you help Erie do better?

  • If you have COPD, see your doctor yearly to check how well your lungs are working.
  • Encourage people you know with COPD to have their lungs checked yearly.
  • Ask your doctor the questions below.

What to ask your doctor:

  • What does my spirometry test show?
  • If my values are worse than normal, what can I do to make them better?
  • How can I manage COPD with my other health conditions?
  • How can I learn more?
