Brain Gain: Post-Secondary Activity

This trend is mixed or inconclusive.

Post-Secondary activity looks at what students plan to do after they graduate from high school. More specifically, it looks at whether they plan to pursue higher education and at what level. It is an indicator of future educational attainment in a region that offers a glimpse of what the local workforce will look like in coming years and other issues.

The total number of young people who graduated from Erie County public schools increased from 2010 to 2012. However, the latest data show that the number of young people who graduated decreased slightly by 104 students from 2012 to 2013. The percentage of these graduates who plan on going to college also decreased from 68.7 percent to 67.4 percent from 2012 to 2013.

Though the county experienced a decline in college-bound graduates in 2013, the county’s rate has risen above the statewide average for the first time since 2008. The county is also above the statewide average of total high school graduates pursuing postsecondary, including those who plan on attending a four-year college, community college, professional or trade school or other institution.
